Early Music Concert January 3
The second incarnation of the Early Music Center is hosting a concert of pre-1760s music on Sunday, Jan. 3. It comes on the tail end of the 12 days of Christmas, a detail that, like the music to be preformed, is oft-overlooked.
Both Hanukkah and Christmas songs will be played mainly on the traditional instruments of the time period, and sung in both English and Latin.
Patrica Olds, the director of the Early Music Center, started the learning group in 1979, but closed the center down in the early 90s. Now she is trying to revive interest in the classical and baroque styles in musicians of the 21st century.
The Early Music Group will be preforming on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Yellow Springs Senior Center’s Great Room. Admission is free, although there will be a suggested donation.

Senior Center Nears Annual Goal

Halfway through its 2009 Annual Appeal Fund Drive, the Yellow Springs Senior Citizens Center has received more than half of its $40,000 goal.
The fund campaign, which runs from July 1 through December 31, has reached the $25,000 mark as of the past weekend. Appeal Committee members celebrated the event by placing a new knitted wool color band on the “Totem-up Pole” in the side yard of the Center on Xenia Avenue downtown.
Each color band is made of material from recycled knitted wool sweaters in keeping with the knitting theme currently popular in the village.
"We’re extremely pleased with the number of repeat gifts from people who have supported the Senior Center for many years,” said Mary M. Morgan, Annual Appeal chairperson. The money makes it possible for the Center to provide services to seniors in the area like transportation, homemaking help, and problem solving of various kinds.”
“It’s great to have reached this point in the Annual Appeal,” said Ed Dressler, trustee and Annual Appeal Committee member, “but a lot of new donors will have to contribute if we are to make our annual goal of $40,000 by December 31.”
Florence Randolph, also a trustee and Annual Appeal Committee member, is hopeful but expresses caution.
“Since the Center does not receive funds from the Village of Yellow Springs, as many senior centers [receive funds from their municipalities],” she said, “we hope that more and more people in and around Yellow Springs will be willing to support this effort.
“Last week we received two gifts in memory of seniors who have recently died,” she added. “That is a very thoughtful kind of memorial, and it also helps senior who are still living.”
Members of the 2009 Annual Appeal Committee are Mary M. Morgan, chairperson, Andrée Bognar, Wanda Cubbage, Joan Horn, Florence Randolph, Sally Palmer, and Ed Dressler.
Envelopes for contributions are available at the front and side doors of the Senior Center. Information on the Annual Appeal and other topics is available at 937-767-5751 or www.seniorcitizenscenter.org.

This event was made possible with help by
the Yellow Springs Arts Council and the Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce.
A piazza is defined as, "a public square or marketplace, especially in an Italian town." Although Yellow Springs is neither in Italy nor has a public square, the event creators, Marybeth Wolf and Judith Wolert-Maldonado, wished to recreate the kind of outdoor festivities that can be found throughout piazzas in Italy and plazas in Latin America in the summer months.

GCCOA Old Fashioned Picnic July 19th
This special event is the kick-off to the senior services levy campaign for those connected to the Greene County Council on Aging and senior centers. And while we will be raising funds for levy campaign, the most important objective is to energize ourselves for the challenging AND exciting four months ahead!
The picnic is Sunday, July 19th from 4-6pm at Palmetto Farm in Bellbrook and the $10 tickets are available at the senior centers, the Council and at the gate.
A Time to Dance or Watch the Dancing
Marta Mari-Crocker to be featured performer at this week's Dance Piazza with DJ Juju
You and yours are invited to an outdoor international dance party on Saturday, July 11 from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm at the landscaped "piazza" or plaza, at 100 Corry Street in Yellow Springs, Ohio. This event is open and free to all ages. There are plenty of benches and places to sit, watch and listen from, if you wish to just come out - your presence is welcome!
From 7:15 pm to 8:00 pm this week's "Dance Piazza" will feature Yellow Springs-based belly dancer, Marta Mari-Crocker and her former student, Elise Yaskoff. Mari-Crocker will demonstrate various forms of belly dance and will follow with audience participation with the assistance of Yaskoff.
From 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm Argentine-American DJ Juju will spin Latin dance tunes, along with other world & American dance music including Afro-beat, Bhangra and Middle Eastern dance.
This event will take place on three more Saturdays in 2009: July 25, August 1 and August 22, from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, at 100 Corry Street. From 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm on each Saturday, the "Dance Piazza" will feature different street performances throughout the summer, from Middle Eastern dance to live drums to fire dance, swing dance, international folk dance & more, to be followed by DJ Juju's world dance music mixes from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
This event for Summer in the Springs was made possible with help by the Yellow Springs Arts Council and the Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce.

Library Funding Alert
OHIO LIBRARY FUNDING EMERGENCY | PUBLIC HELP NEEDED
Greene County, Ohio: On Friday, Governor Strickland proposed a last minute change to the State Budget: the new budget cuts funding for Ohio’s Libraries by an additional $100 million dollars a year for the next two years.
Public libraries are a vital lifeline to job hunting information, education, and family fun in a down economy. The Greene County Public Library system receives 55% of its funding from the State of Ohio. This funding rises and falls with the State’s income, and funding for libraries has already fallen dramatically in the current recession. If the Governor’s new cuts become permanent, it will devastate the services the library provides to children, teens, adults and seniors throughout Greene County even as Library use is at an all time high.
Under the Governor’s proposal, the funding for Ohio’s libraries would drop to nearly half of 2008 levels. The cost to the Greene County Public Library would be $2.2 million in 2009 and $3.5 million in 2010. The cut for this year would be in addition to the $3.3 million reduction the library is already facing because of declining state tax revenues.
"We have already absorbed large drops in state funding while working as hard as we can to not reduce services for our wonderful patrons," said Karl Colón, Director of the Greene County Public Library system. "But, without this key state funding, we will have to make deep cuts in hours, eliminate services, and possibly even close branches in the future."
The library is asking the public to help protect the funding by contacting their representatives and the Governor’s office by phone and email this week. Contact information for those offices is below and can also be found on the library's website and in all library locations.
